OMG! I'm sinking...Taking Your Eyes Off Jesus
Faith doesn’t mean the wind stops blowing. It means we keep looking at the One who told us to come, even while it blows.
We all know the story of Peter walking on water for a brief moment… and then suddenly beginning to sink.
Some people say he “reached the deep end.”
But if you actually read the passage in Matthew 14, the disciples’ boat was already in the middle of the sea. And last time I checked, the middle of the sea is already deep.
So depth wasn’t Peter’s problem.
Focus was.
Jesus came walking toward them on the water. Peter responded boldly:
“Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.”
Jesus said one word:
“Come.”
And Peter did the impossible. He stepped out of the boat and walked on water.
But then something shifted.
The wind grew strong.
The waves felt real.
Fear crept in.
Scripture says Peter became afraid, and that’s when he began to sink.
What Changed?
It wasn’t the water.
It wasn’t the storm.
It wasn’t Jesus.
Peter took his eyes off Christ and began focusing on the circumstances around him.
And how often do we do the same?
How many times have we:
- Started out trusting God,
- Then looked at the diagnosis, the bills, the uncertainty, the pressure…
- And suddenly felt ourselves sinking under the weight of it all?
We cannot keep one eye on Jesus and one eye on the storm.
Faith doesn’t mean the wind stops blowing. It means we keep looking at the One who told us to come, even while it blows.
This is the same Jesus who said:
“Peace, be still.”
The same One who called Peter is calling us to trust Him beyond what we can control.
He is still the One who empowers us to walk through what should have overwhelmed us.
The storm didn’t disqualify Peter. It revealed where his focus needed to be.
A Reminder for Today
Whatever you are facing, don’t fix your eyes on the waves. Fix your eyes on Christ.
Because He who began a good work in you will carry it to completion. (Philippians 1:6)
So trust.
Stay focused.
And keep walking.
